Understanding the different levels of self-driving cars is key to appreciating how close we are to fully autonomous vehicles.

The levels of self-driving cars are defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and range from Level 0 to Level 5.

Level 0 (No Automation): The driver is entirely responsible for controlling the vehicle. This level includes basic warning systems but no automated functions. Achieved and standard today.

Level 1 (Driver Assistance): Features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist help the driver but require constant attention and control. Widely available now.

When I feel dehydrated I love using something like LiquidIV to rehydrate, but the stuff is so expensive.
random thoughts: retail usdc, eth restaking, pizza

had a great conversation this week with Aaron McCann of Williamsburg Pizza. learned that his pizza locations are accepting Dogecoin. got me thinking more about retail crypto adoption. many of the topics below came from my discussion with Aaron.

just a collection of random things in my head this week of march 18, 2024.

relistening to Tim Ferriss Interview of Matt Mochary, one of my favorite episodes

thankful to have attended the live Random Show recording with Tim Ferriss and Kevin Rose at SWSW in Austin, and that I won the opportunity to have dinner with them

thinking about how retail can accept crypto (USDC), and after trying Daimo I think Base chain will make it possible sooner

continue to be fascinated by ETH restaking with EigenLayer, and the best explanation on what restaking is might be from this 13 year old VC

custom personal trainer GPT for Vitruvian Trainer+

I was skeptical about magnetic weight resistance before trying a Tonal demo. After trying it in a mall, I was a believer in the technology.

After doing a bunch of research on magnetic resistance machines for home, it came down to Tonal and Vitruvian for me. I ended up going with Vitruvian for these reasons:

Vitruvian can support max lift of 440lbs vs Tonal’s max of ~200lbs

Tonal has to be professionally mounted to wall studs. Vitruvian sits on the floor and requires no install.

Vitruvian weighs 65lbs, and has two wheels to easily lift and roll it around

Tonal seems to have better software UX, but Vitruvian seems to have better hardware.

Vitruvian retains all of its 300+ exercise library even if you stop paying for the subscription

I have only had the Vitruvian for a week so it is too early to give a full review, but thus far I am incredibly impressed with it.

crypto wallet hardware 2024

How do you keep your crypto and NFTs safe? Here are my recommendations in 2024.

metal seed phrase wallets

never store your seed phrase in a computer, phone, photo, or any digital interface. even for your hot wallet! use a method like this if you don’t want to trust in a piece of paper.

expensive and convenient (no hammering or engraving required)

Billfodl, seems to be the highest quality ($100)

KeyStone Metal Wallet ($60)

cheap and manual route

more suitable for hot wallet seed phrases

requires any metal engraver, I got a Dremel Rotary Tool ($24)

steel wallet plates, currently 6 plates for $16

hardware wallet

Ledger Nano S Plus still seems like the easiest bet for the price, it’s compatible with Metamask, Phantom, Temple, and pretty much any browser extension wallet that exists (~$80)

exploring UAPs and alien tech with ChatGPT

i have a fascination with verified UAP video footage ever since the declassification of the USS Nimitz videos in 2017-2018.

conspiracies and unverified sightings you might see on r/UFOs were never interesting to me (fwiw, r/UAP seems good), but i am very curious about undiscovered tech that could change what we think is possible.

before chatgpt, researching stuff like this was tedious. now, it’s easy to choose your own adventure. here’s what I found by researching, summarizing, and comparing results between openai chatgpt 4 and google gemini advanced (1.5).

S-Tier kitchen gadgets

Somewhere along the line between college and my late 30s I became really interested in buying only the top quality kitchen products as I gradually threw out the cheap ones I accumulated in my 20s. These are the ones I really stand behind.

Duralex Mis en Place mini glass bowls, Made in France ($30)

these Norpro Silicone pinch bowls are a nice kid-friendly alternative

OXO Squeeze and Pour Silicone Measuring Cups ($30)

a bit expensive, but I really prefer them over glass pyrex liquid measuring cups

Matfer High-Temp Fish Spatula ($19)

My go-to spatula for just about everything (we have two)!

OXO Salad Spinner ($30)

Takes up precious cabinet space but is crucial for washing/drying fruit and vegetables

Electric Salt and Pepper Grinders ($32)

I don’t love the quality of this product, but the convenience for cooking is unmatched. if you come across a higher quality version let me know.

Cuisipro Cheese Grater ($34)

I don’t like grating cheese, but recognize it’s necessary sometimes. I was surprised at how much better the experience is with a high-quality grater.

Instant Vortex XL Air Fryer ($130)

Substantially better than the cheap air fryer we started with.

web 3.0: read-write-own

the simplest narrative I have seen to explain tokens, nfts, and crypto:

web 1.0 was read-only

web 2.0 was read/write

web 3.0 is read/write/own

traditional web 2.0 platforms like reddit, twitter, facebook, and instagram own your friendships, messages, connections, ad views, and data. they provide use of their platform in return.

the next era of apps will use tokens to bootstrap new networks, giving users the ability to own their data and take it with them to whichever app or network best fits their needs. this is not possible without the use of the blockchain.

farcaster seems to be our first chance to see a decentralized social network that actually works.

farcaster is the protocol, warpcast is the interface.

Here is an invite link to warpcast, it has a $8 one-time fee to create an account (this helps prevent spam)

Here is my profile: https://warpcast.com/silv.eth

To get started:

download the warpcast app on ios or android, and pay the $8 fee.

a cast is post, just like a tweet. unlike twitter, you should always make your posts in a channel. if you make a post without a channel and you have few followers, you will not get any engagement.

Explore the channels, and follow a few that sound interesting. Good starting points are /books, /fitness, /ai, /finance, /parenting

Try out Frames, which are a really cool way of embedding an interactive widget into a cast. Here is a simple poll frame I created.

Get your active user badge by completing the steps listed here on FarcasterUserStats.com.

Farcaster has a reddit-like experience with channels. Channels cost 2500 warps per year to keep up, almost like a domain registration. Here is, /washingtondc a channel I created for 2500 warps ($25).

If you’re into crypto/NFTs, you can verify your crypto wallet under Edit Profile > Verified Address. I love how it supports ENS domains as usernames out of the box:

If you really get into it and want features like scheduling messages, multi-account management, bookmarks, and lists, consider trying out the $10/mo paid product, SuperCast, which I am dabbling with now.

according to chatgpt the risk of an EMP event in the US is low, but not impossible. that’s a good enough reason for me to do a little research and decide if there is a way to be prepared for less than $100. let’s see what we can do:

This list assumes you already have some basic household items that everyone should have like a first-aid kit, manual can opener, flashlights, and non-perishable food.

Personal Opsec in 2024

This guide provides simple, age-inclusive instructions for improving online security in 2024. We’ll update it regularly based on expert feedback.

Key Terms

OPSEC (Operations Security): Techniques to protect private data and devices.

2FA (Two-Factor Authentication): An extra security layer for your accounts, beyond just the password.

Bare Minimum Security Steps

Restart your computer, mobile phone, and tablet once per week

Enable automatic updates for:

Mobile phones and apps.

Computers and tablets.

Web browsers.

Set a reminder every 3 months to check in case auto-update fails.

Use a password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden.

Enable 2FA on your password manager.

Create unique, 18+ character passwords for each site.

Use non-SMS based 2FA for email.

Activate number lock or SIM swap protection with your mobile provider.

Prioritizing Your Security Risks

Once you’ve covered the basics, assess and address your other security risks. Here’s how I prioritize:
